Right to Rent — a guide for tenants

What is a Right to Rent check?

Before you move in, your landlord or letting agent is legally required to check that you have the right to live in the UK. This is called a Right to Rent check.

What you will be asked to provide

You will need to provide one of the following:

• A valid UK or Irish passport
• A biometric residence permit
• A Home Office share code (if you have a digital immigration status)
• Other acceptable documents listed on the gov.uk website

Home Office share codes

If you have a digital immigration status (e.g. EU Settlement Scheme), you can generate a share code at gov.uk/view-prove-immigration-status. Give this code to your landlord — they use it to verify your status online without needing to see a physical document.

Your rights

A landlord cannot discriminate based on nationality when conducting checks. They must check all adult occupants equally, not just those who appear to be from abroad.
