Your rights under RRA 2025
Under the Renters Rights Act 2025, landlords must consider reasonable pet requests. A blanket no-pets policy is no longer automatically enforceable.
How to make a request
- Open your tenant portal.
- Go to the Pet request section.
- Describe the pet: type, breed, size, age.
- Include supporting info — references from previous landlords, vaccinations, insurance.
- Submit. Your landlord has 42 days to respond.
What can happen
- Approved — you can keep the pet
- Refused with reason — the landlord must give a written reason that is reasonable under RRA 2025
- Conditional approval — landlord may require pet insurance as a condition
If you believe a refusal is unreasonable, you can challenge it through the First-tier Tribunal.
